Age | DoB: 26 | May 2, 1983

Birthplace: Lawrence, Kansas

PERSONALITY

Sam's addictive, sensitive, and disciplined personality's driven his desire for power, but wants to use said power to help save lives and redeem himself. He's good at listening to people's problems, but not good at taking orders, as he prefers to do his own thing and work things out for himself – be it good or bad.

When first introduced to his character, Sam's an emotional, melancholy person who had lost the love of his life in a horrible way, just like his mother died, but is focused on vengeance, to avenge Jessica's death and allowing revenge to fuel his desires to stop evil, despite the damage it caused on himself and his family. Sam is very determined and can be quite stubborn, especially if he believes he's right. He just wants to show John and Dean that he's not a little kid anymore.

But as his abilities develop his personality changes from scared, to overly confident, concerned, and determined, all of this being encompassed by the empowerment to do more with them because they make him feel special. Sam opens up more with women, and his sexual personality is a lot rougher and more passionate than his brother. Despite his well-mannered exterior, in the bedroom Sam becomes aggressive and likes to take charge of the women he sleeps with, but returns to a more passive and quiet state after sex. As he explores his powers, they lead him down the path he was meant for – learning the source of his power. However, instead of being vengeful, Sam showed mercy like a true hero, and then is murdered in cold blood by a kid named Jake. This one act changed him forever when he returned from the dead, making him more ruthless and showed no remorse for murdering Jake. As Sam's darker side started to grow stronger, he still displayed signs of being even more avid about protecting the innocent, saving his brother, and destroying evil, even if it means taking matters into his own hands more often.

No matter what Sam becomes or how his personality changes, a part of him will always still be that sweet, polite, scared little boy who just wanted his mother's love, his father's approval, and his brother's respect. Sam is a hero – a human and a demon – but he will always be the sensitive, caring, methodical, passionate, and loving guy that just wanted to be normal, but will always be a bit of a freak.

HISTORY

Sam Winchester was born on May 2, 1983 in Lawrence, Kansas to Mary and John Winchester, and was named for his grandfather, Samuel Campbell. When he was six months, a demon with yellow eyes named Azazel came to visit, giving him demon blood. When Mary interrupted, Azazel killed her, pinning her to the ceiling, and setting the house on fire, leaving John to save Sam from the fire.

When Sam was six, he was left in the care of his older brother, Dean, while John was out on a hunt. Dean became bored, and left Sam in the motel room by himself, when a shtriga attacked him, then rescued by John. Up until he was eight, Sam believed that his mom was killed in a car accident, and that didn't know that his dad was a hunter. But on discovering John's journal, Sam confronted Dean who confirmed that supernatural beings do exist, their mom was killed by one, and their father hunts them. Sam had gotten a pendent from his and Dean "uncle", Bobby Singer, who said it was real special and he was going to give it to John as a Christmas gift, but gave it to Dean instead.

In 1995, Sam won a division championship soccer trophy, which John kept in a storage locker. Two years later (1997), in the summer, Sam, Dean, and John hunted and killed a werewolf. Later that year, Dean takes Sam to Truman High in Fairfax, Indiana, and Sam complained that it was their third school that they'd been to in the year. One boy, Barry Cook, introduced himself to Sam, who told a bully to leave Barry alone. The bully, Dirk, threatened to take on Sam but then backs down when Sam offers to take him on.

Sam came to Barry's help when another bully shoved him to the ground. In the hallway, Dirk caught up to Sam and knocked him to the ground. The teacher warned him away before Sam can do anything. Dean planned to get revenge on Dirk, but Sam told him he didn't need his help. Sam explains he didn't want to be a freak so he took a beating. Sam's teacher, Mr. Wyatt, talked to him, surprised about Sam submitting a non-fiction project about his family killing a werewolf over the summer. Mr. Wyatt gave him an 'A' and asked about his family. He wondered if Sam wanted to go into the family business and Sam noted no one has ever asked him that. Sam said he doesn't and Mr. Wyatt says he lived his own life and Sam should too.

In 2001, Sam rebelled against going into the family business of hunting supernatural evil and went to Stanford University to major in pre-law. Four years later, he began applying to Stanford Law School, and was living with his girlfriend Jessica. Twenty-two years later to the day, Azazel killed Jessica in the same manner that his mother was, spurring him to embark on a journey with Dean to find their father and kill the demon.

Both brothers deal with mythological creatures and urban legends, everything from demons, spirits, and werewolves to the Woman in White, Bloody Mary, and shape shifters. During this time, Sam begins experiencing episodes of precognitive dreams and once displays telekinesis. However, both of the boys argue a lot over the way that John treats them. Dean obeys the orders that's given to him, while Sam questions the orders and resents his father's treatment of them as loyal little soldiers.

Later, John is captured by demons, but the brothers manage to rescue him. However, they soon learned that Azazel was in possession of their father's body. They managed to subdue him, but killing the demon would have also meant the death of their father. Though John begged Sam to kill him, the younger brother couldn't bring himself to do it, and the demon escaped. As Sam drove his father and Dean to a hospital, a truck that was being driven by a demon-possessed man crashed into them, totaling Dean's Impala and gravely injuring the Winchesters.

The Winchesters were taken to a Nashville hospital, with Sam and John escaping with only minor injuries, while Dean was on the brink of death. John made a deal with Azazel, and sacrificed his soul in exchange for Dean's life. After the deal is made, the boys mourn their father and start to take a more active role in hunting.

Sam and Dean met three people that John once knew: Ellen and Jo Harvelle (mother and daughter), and Ash, their computer genius associate, who assist the brothers in their hunting. Sam displays immunity to a boy by the name of Andy Gallagher's power of mind control, and is also immune to the demonic sulfur virus known as the Croatoan virus.

Sam later learned what John had told Dean before his death: that the demon plans to use Sam and children like him to become evil and use him and the others as soldiers in an upcoming war. But he's convinced that he had to save as many people as he could in order to change his destiny. However, when Sam became possessed by the same demon that had possessed a girl by the name of Meg, it becomes clear that if the time came for Dean to shoot his brother, Dean wouldn't be able to do so.

The younger Winchester became trapped in a haunted, abandoned town in South Dakota with Azazel's other chosen children. It was revealed that there's demon blood in Sam, and his mother Mary knew who the demon was, much to his surprise. A soldier named Jake stabbed Sam and died in Dean's arms just as he and Bobby arrived. Dean had then made a deal with a Crossroads Demon to deliver himself to Hell in one year in exchange for Sam's life. Sam wasn’t aware of what had happened while he was dead, and was completely unaware that he was ever dead in the first place. During the battle that had transpired to prevent Jake and the "Yellow-Eyed Demon" (Azazel) from unleashing a demonic army, Sam shot and killed Jake, unloading over ten bullets into his body. This was the first time that Sam ever killed a man, or at the very least someone who wasn't a demon, and showed no remorse for it.

In order to save Dean from going to Hell, Sam went on a quest to find a loophole in his brother's contract with the Crossroads Demon. For quite some time, he is quiet and exasperated about Dean's recklessness tendencies, but his older brother's suicidal behavior bothers him a lot. He tried everything in his power to save his brother, and even went as far as to summon the Crossroads Demon and shoot her with the Colt. But that doesn't work, and he received unlikely help from Ruby, a demon who reveals that not everybody in hell is opposed to Sam. He learned that he holds unconvinced fame as the "boy-king" or "The Anti-Christ", something that brings another hunter by the name of Gordon Walker to pick up his trail and hunt him down. Sam once again kills, this time the person being Gordon, using nothing but his own two hands and a wire.

Sam lived through a groundhog-day like setting over one hundred times in which Dean is killed and he can't save him, and he has to take care of himself with Dean in Hell. Sam even goes as far as to consider using a questionable scientific method in order to save Dean, but instead helps a homicidal doctor to stay "alive" in a Frankenstein-like body. Throughout everything, Ruby claims that she knows a way to help Sam save Dean, but was lying to them in order to get Sam to embrace his demonic powers. In the end, he never did find a way to save his brother, and had to watch Lilith sic her Hellhounds on Dean and tear him to pieces, dragging his brother's soul to Hell.

After Dean's death, Sam was in despair and tried to make a deal with a Crossroads Demon, but no demon would deal with him. He has a death wish because of his drinking excessively and acting recklessly – until Ruby contacted him and began to teach him how to use his demon-given powers, who shook Sam out of his depression to some extent. The two quickly become lovers, and hunted demons together, with Sam exorcising and sending them back to Hell by using his powers. When Dean is resurrected from the dead, the younger brother is overwhelmed and they promptly began to fight. An angel named Castiel informed Dean of Sam's use of his powers, which lead up to a minor fallout between the brothers as Dean tried to get Sam to stop using them and hanging out with Ruby.

Sam's more religious than Dean, and was delighted to find out that angels were helping them, but was severely disillusioned when he finally met Castiel and Uriel, and that the angels had attempted to destroy an entire town. Uriel treated Sam with complete disgust, and threatened to kill him as soon as he was no longer useful. Sam promised Dean to stop using his abilities, but quickly broke the promise.

Dean, in turn, lied to Sam, claiming that he remembered nothing of Hell, but revealed that he did remember, but didn't want to tell him. Dean finally told Sam the awful truth of Hell to him, that the four months he was there felt like forty years, and that Dean was tortured for three-quarters of that time under the demon Alastair until he finally agreed to become a torturer. The older brother confessed that he wished he couldn't feel at all, because the thoughts of his past actions in Hell tormented him.

Sam had a short-lived fight with Ruby about his powers: her arguing that he shouldn't be going on the meaningless hunts and to go after Lilith, which, eventually he gives in to, on the count of that he doesn't want to be hunting when he's old.

The secret to Sam's increase in power is finally revealed: he's drinking Ruby's blood. After their latest session, Sam could restrain demons with his mind, as well as outright kill them rather than just sending them back to Hell, much like other spells and weapons did. Sam recognized that the development in his powers as such is wrong, but wanted to do it anyways. After he used his powers to torture Alastair into revealing who was (or wasn't) killing the angels, Sam killed him. It was soon discovered after that he was addicted to the demon blood, and, that without it, his powers wouldn't be as strong. He was seen drinking it from a stashed flask full of it, and then tried to contact Ruby a number of times when he ran out. As Sam grew more and more desperate and heard no word from Ruby, he drank the blood of another demon he was about to kill as Dean watched. Bobby and Dean tricked Sam and locked him inside of Bobby's panic room.

Sam went through painful withdraws symptoms and began experiencing hallucinations. After he was telekinetically thrown around the room, Bobby and Dean restrained him to the bed to stop him from hurting himself. Castiel released the restraints and broke the seals, which allowed Sam to escape. He found Ruby and drank from her again, at which time Ruby explained that if he killed Lilith, that would stop the apocalypse, but he had to consume more blood to be powerful enough to do so. Dean tracked down Sam despite his efforts to trick him, and entered the room, attempting to attack Ruby, but the younger brother stopped him. Sam and Dean argued about how to stop the apocalypse, and Dean told Sam that he was changing into a monster, which lead to a vicious fight between the two. After Sam defeated Dean, he left despite Dean’s warning that if he left now, not to return.

The younger brother began to feel hurt about abandoning the older, much to Ruby's annoyance. Sam captured a demon that was tasked with stealing babies for Lilith and tortured her for Lilith’s location and the place of the final seal. After the torture, Sam had every intention of killing the demon with his powers, but Ruby reminds him that he would need more blood to defeat Lilith than she could give and persuades him to take the demon along for her blood. At this point, the demon "went to sleep", leaving a scared human behind who fearfully plead to be let go, which brought about immense guilt in Sam. A message from Dean, which was altered by the angel Zachariah, manipulated Sam to push him to continue his original mission to kill Lilith, and he drained the woman of her blood.

Now that he had the information, Sam and Ruby went to St. Mary's Convent in Ilchester, Maryland, where they found Lilith. As Sam attempted to kill Lilith, Ruby held the doors shut to keep the newly arrived Dean from interfering. Sam hesitated when he heard his brother yelling for him, but when Lilith mocked him for his inability to do the job after becoming a monster to get to this point, he finishes her off, which fulfilled his true destiny as the "special child". Lilith's death broke the final seal and began to form a portal for Lucifer. At this crucial point, Ruby revealed to Sam that she was leading him along the entire time so he would break the seal. With Dean finally entering the room, the older brother killed Ruby with her own knife while Sam held her in place. Sam apologized to Dean, and the portal for Lucifer started to open. As it opens, the brothers are teleported onto an airplane by an unknown force. Sam lost his demon powers, and claimed that the force that transported the two of them onto the plane cleaned him up.

Sam felt tremendous guilt for starting the apocalypse and is told by Dean that he can no longer have the relationship and unconditional trust because he chose a demon over his brother and no amount of apologies could make things okay between them.

After the brothers fought War (one of the Horsemen of the Apocalypse), Sam and Dean decided to go their separate ways, with Sam worried that he was a dangerous liability. While they were apart, Sam had a dream of his dead girlfriend Jessica, who asked what he was planning to do with the rest of his life. Jessica then morphed into Lucifer, who told Sam that his current vessel is only temporary and that Sam Is his true vessel, and, without trickery or lies, he would agree to become his vessel.

In an alternate future taking place in 2014, Sam had said yes to Lucifer, because Dean wasn't in his life. The future version of Dean, who had become a highly vicious and utilitarian hunter without Sam, went hunting for Lucifer with the Colt, but died. Present Dean, who watched these events take place, went back to his own time and told Sam to come back and hunt again with him, because they "keep each other human".

It was revealed to the boys by the Trickster (whom is really the Archangel Gabriel), that their relationship mirrors that of Michael and Lucifer, with Michael and Dean both being the older brother who was loyal to a distant father; Lucifer and Sam being the younger brothers who betrayed the father and brother. It was foretold to the angels to bring about Judgment Day.

As they followed a text message from the prophet Chuck Shurley, Sam and Dean arrived at a hotel, which was the site for a Supernatural fan convention. They found out that it was their over-enthusiastic fan, Becky Rosen, who stole Chuck's phone from out of his pants and sent the message, and they had to deal with several Sam and Dean wannabes who were participating in a fictitious ghost hunt. After a convention attendee was seriously injured by real ghosts, the brothers started researching and found out that there really was a real ghost haunting the hotel. Together with two of the copy-cat Winchesters, they salted and burned the ghost's bones, but accidentally set another ghost free. The same wannabes that helped Sam and Dean salt and burn the first set of bones were able to salt and burn the other set on their own. Upon leaving the hotel, Becky revealed to the Winchesters that Bela didn't hand over the Colt to Lilith, but gave it to her right hand demon, Crowley, instead.

Sam and Dean had finally been able to track down the Colt that Crowley had possession of. To their surprise, the demon shot his henchmen and gave them the gun back, with a statement that he wanted Lucifer dead because he believed that eventually Lucifer would kill all of the demons after the humans. The brothers returned to Bobby’s place, where they had a "last night on Earth" picture taken with Ellen, Jo, Castiel, and Bobby.

When Meg arrived and sent the hellhounds after the team (Sam, Dean, Ellen, and Jo), Jo was severely wounded while trying to help Dean, and the four took shelter in a hardware store. Jo, who realized that she wouldn't recover from the attack, suggested that Sam and Dean build a bomb to blow up the hellhounds, using her as bait to lure the demonic dogs. Ellen volunteered to stay behind so she could let them in and set off the bomb while Sam and Dean escaped. Jo died in Ellen's arms, who blew up the building and killed herself and the hellhounds in the process.

The brothers found Lucifer, who killed all the women and children in the town as part of the ritual to summon the final Horseman of the Apocalypse, Death, and that all of the men are possessed by demons. Dean, in turn, shot Lucifer with the Colt, but Lucifer recovered instantly and revealed that there's only five beings that the gun can't kill, and that he happened to be one of them, before he sacrificed several demons to summon Death. Castiel freed himself from the ring of flaming Holy Oil that Lucifer trapped him in, and took the boys back to Bobby's, where Bobby threw the picture into the fire as if it were a hunter's funeral pyre, and together grieved over Jo and Ellen's deaths.
